Old Products and New Limits in Agrochemicals and Biocides

Dec 12, 2024

The global push for sustainable agrochemistry and improved health standards for consumers and operators is reshaping the regulation of agrochemicals.

Each year, new regulations require many products to undergo recertification. Even well-established formulations must now provide updated impurity data, often with stricter limits.

Key examples include fertilizers (Regulation EU 2019/1009) and copper and sulfur formulations (Regulation EU 1107/2009), widely used in both conventional and organic farming. Modern regulations demand metal impurity analyses for both technical and formulated products, with detection limits below parts per billion (ppb) in complex matrices. Even previously registered products must comply with updated standards by submitting new data.

Similarly, biocide formulations—such as those containing hydrogen peroxide—are now subject to stricter impurity limits under the Biocide Regulation EU 528/2012.

Traditional analysis methods like Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Optical ICP can no longer meet these rigorous requirements, often forcing laboratories to outsource testing. This results in longer turnaround times and increased costs.

Renolab: Meeting the Challenge with ICP-MS Technology
Renolab tackles these challenges with its cutting-edge ICP-MS instrumentation, offering reliable, accurate, and fast metal impurity analyses—even in complex matrices. With ICP-MS, Renolab can deliver results in days rather than weeks, avoiding the need for external outsourcing.

In addition to metal impurity analysis, Renolab provides a full range of services for the characterization and registration of agrochemicals and biocides, ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory demands.
